Chapter 3 - The Shock

Five days later . . .

"Nikki, could you please come downstairs?" Steve White called up the stairs to his daughter.

I was sitting on a beanbag chair in my room reading when I heard the call, "Just a minute Dad," I yelled back.

My room is covered floor to ceiling with posters of my favourite band, The Moffatts. I have my own computer and phone line (which is always busy because I am always on the Internet). There isnt that much furniture though, only my bed, a desk, beanbag chair, dresser, bookcase and a few shelves to keep computer stuff on.

I put a bookmark in the book that I was reading (To Ride Pegasus by Anne McCaffrey) and paused the Moffatts CD in my CD player. I turned out the light and left the room. I bounced down the stairs, taking two at a time, humming "Ill Be There For You" (by The Moffatts) under my breath.

When I reached the bottom of the stairs I stopped humming as the look on my face turned puzzled. There sitting before me at the Dining room table was my parents, two adults I didnt recognize, and last but not least, Zac.

Zac sat at the far end of the table looking just as puzzled as I felt.

My Mom gestured for me to sit down beside him and we exchanged a confused glance. The other adults introduced themselves to me. They were Zacs parents. I had this feeling that something bad was about to happen or had happened. Why else would they fly all the way to Vancouver from Oklahoma? Thats a pretty long ways to travel.

The events that followed had a surreal feel to them. I heard people talking but I couldnt respond and what they were saying wasnt sinking in. Zac and I were told, quite bluntly actually, that we were twins separated at birth. Shortly after they said that I would be moving to Tulsa to live with the rest of the family, I excused myself and went back up to my room.
